Sustainability of a long-term volunteer-based bird monitoring program

چکیده
With an increasing demand and reliance on volunteers in a host of different sectors, the need for organisations to understand motivating factors behind volunteering, and how to retain volunteer services, is crucial. This paper examines the recruitment, retention and attrition among a group of volunteers participating in a long-term monitoring program for the critically endangered orange-bellied parrot Neophema chrysogaster. This project is one of the longest running of its type in Australia with more than 20 years of survey activities. Volunteers were most often recruited via other environmental agencies. Almost three-quarters of respondents had been involved in birdwatching or other bird monitoring activities usually in connection with conservation organisations. The modal response was an involvement of 10–20 years, with most other responses in the range 0–5 years. The majority intend to continue volunteering, but cited perceived health and time commitments as the main factors behind possible future decisions to cease volunteering. Respondents suggested improvements in the volunteer management of the program, and in particular, thought a personal ‘thank you’, would maintain motivation and

Dietary Compositions and Their Seasonal Shifts in Japanese Resident Birds, Estimated from the Analysis of Volunteer Monitoring Data
Determining the composition of a bird's diet and its seasonal shifts are fundamental for understanding the ecology and ecological functions of a species. Various methods have been used to estimate the dietary compositions of birds, which have their own advantages and disadvantages. In this study, we examined the possibility of using long-term volunteer monitoring data as the source of dietary i...
متن کاملA behavioural ecology approach to understand volunteer surveying for citizen science datasets
Among other outcomes, volunteer surveys are useful for evaluating conservation success and determining priorities for management actions. However, biases that can originate from untargeted and weakly structured surveys can undermine the utility of the data gathered. Identifying and rectifying biases and problems with such data require an understanding of the behaviour of volunteers. We explored...
متن کاملA framework for implementing sustainable tourism in national parks of Iran: development and use of sustainable tourism indica-tors in Boujagh National Park, Iran
Despite the fact that national parks and other protected areas are mostly adopting the sustainable development process, it was found that sustainability has yet to be perceived pragmatically in these areas. Due to its process, this paper presents a monitoring framework approach to develop and implement indicators for sustainable tourism. To illustrate the application of the framework, a set of ...
متن کاملOn the design of monitoring programs and the use of population indices : a reply to Ellingson and Lukacs
In our paper (Hutto and Young 2002), we outlined why regional monitoring programs are needed; why birds should be used as monitoring tools; why we designed our monitoring program (including the distribution of long-term monitoring points) the way we did; the benefits associated with monitoring from permanent points on a biennial rather than an annual basis; why we have gained support from manag...
